Teaching Faculty Careers without a PhD: A Mentoring Community
This program is tentative and subject to change.
To meet the need of teaching faculty in computing and information sciences, many institutions of higher education in North America have been actively seeking and successfully recruiting full-time teaching faculty without requiring PhD While these pathways are becoming more established, there remain significant challenges in preparing, recruiting, and supporting teaching faculty in ways that reflect their unique positions in academia.
This Birds of a Feather session will create moments of mentoring—and ideally spark a continuing mentoring community—for those navigating or considering this career track. Faculty at different stages of their journeys (without PhDs) will share common experiences, highlight the benefits of broadening entry points into the profession, and reflect on pitfalls candidates may encounter.
Discussion topics will include navigating the job market, understanding how roles vary across institutions (degree requirements, workload, job security, service, scholarship expectations, and promotion pathways), and strategies for better preparing and mentoring students interested in teaching careers.
We anticipate an open, interactive conversation welcoming participants at all levels of experience, with space for both questions and community-building around the future of teaching-track faculty in computing.
