The Hispanic in Computing group is an informal online community comprising students, faculty, and industry representatives dedicated to providing support to Hispanic students. Established over a decade ago, the group organizes gatherings at national conferences to strengthen the social bonds that connect this small community. This Birds of a Feather seeks to bring together Hispanics and other members of the Computing Education Community interested in supporting Hispanic students.
The gathering at the SIGCSE Technical Symposium will provide an opportunity for Hispanics to connect face-to-face and discuss critical issues pertinent to our community. As the number of Hispanic students in our classrooms increases, it is imperative that we provide mentors and role models for these new students. Furthermore, this group serves as a valuable resource for the broader computing education community. Faculty positions are regularly announced in the listserv, and initiatives celebrating Hispanic achievements are frequently disseminated there.
Such a gathering holds significant value in enhancing representation and visibility, facilitating networking and mentorship, contributing to the strengthening of the collective identity of this community, and fostering a deeper connection between its members and the broader computing education community.
