Evaluating the Role of Ethics Education in Shaping College Students’ Ethical Engagement in Computing Technology
This preliminary program evaluation (N = 240) investigates how embedding ethics in computer science curricula (i.e., the CS+EE Program) at a highly selective R1 institution impacts college students’ ethical engagement in computing technology. In a sample of college students recruited from CS+EE courses, simple linear regressions revealed that increased exposure to the CS+EE curriculum and a stronger growth mindset about ethical issues in computing technology were associated with greater self-perceived abilities and skills in handling ethical issues. This study suggests that CS+EE programs in higher education can play a significant role in shaping the skills, abilities, and beliefs that college students need to engage effectively with ethical issues in their studies and their future work.
